Here in the Nordics, there’s nothing like cozying up on a cold and windy autumn evening. So do it like us Vikings: fill a mug with hot cocoa, light a fire in the fireplace, and cozy up on the couch to one of these TV shows.

While most of these picks may not exactly align with the investing strategy I usually recommend, they make for great entertainment on a cozy Nordic autumn night. Grab your blanket and let’s dive in!

“Billions” (2016–2023)

When it comes to Wall Street drama, the TV show “Billions” is my go-to series. I highly recommend it for the entertainment value and fun stories. Some of the plotlines are even inspired by true events, like the chicken farm story that reminds me of an anecdote investor Ray Dalio shared about how his firm, Bridgewater, made a huge impact that eventually resulted in the creation of chicken nuggets.

Fun fact: Damian Lewis, who plays Bobby Axelrod—one of the main characters—was spotted with David Einhorn’s book “Fooling Some of the People All of the Time“. Einhorn is a Buffett-style investor.

“The Big Short” (2015)

“The Big Short” is a ride through the 2008 financial crisis, unraveling complicated financial instruments like they’re puzzles. The movie is based on Michael Lewis’ excellent book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine”.

Lewis is one of my favorite authors, and I also highly recommend “Flash Boys: A Wall Street Revolt,” which is about the phenomenon of high-frequency trading.

“Becoming Warren Buffett” (2017)

“Becoming Warren Buffett” offers an intimate look into the life and philosophy of the Oracle of Omaha himself. This is the closest you’ll get to a value investing 101 from the master, and I highly recommend it. It’s striking to note how different the community around Buffett is compared to all the Wall Street drama you’ll see in other movies and shows on this list.

“Warren Buffett’s Secret Millionaires Club” (2011)

This is a show you can watch with your kids. When my kids were younger, they loved watching the Secret Millionaires Club. It takes the basics of financial literacy and wraps them up in enjoyable episodes for the whole family. Find it on YouTube.

“Madoff – the Monster of Wall Street” (2023)

In this TV documentary, you’ll learn that not everything is as it seems. Bernie Madoff was one of the most popular fund managers on Wall Street, but it turned out that his company was a Ponzi scheme, and he deceived thousands of good people. It’s an insightful and interesting show and it will teach you to be careful when picking a money manager.

“The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013)

A Hollywood dramatization of Wall Street excess. Funny story—I was headed to Warren Buffett’s annual meeting, and my then-team at LEGO thought I was off to some wild Wall Street-esque party. Little did they know, Buffett’s community is more about books and relationship-building than yachts and bling. It gave us all a good laugh!

“Fairplay” (2023)

This brand-new thriller on Netflix depicts a New York hedge fund as we’ve often seen: an abusive, stressful, and highly competitive environment. The twist this time is that the main character is a woman. It’s a movie to watch on a cold autumn night, but again, I’m noticing how different the environment is at Wall Street compared to the community around Warren Buffett. And I’m so grateful for having chosen the Buffett path.
